Malaysia

Hospitality and culinary training in a food capital, at Southeast Asian prices.

Every ingredient this page asks for has a figure and a source.
Tuition
~$8.2k/yr
The gap between the two rates on one page is the useful part: a foreign student pays roughly a seventh more than a Malaysian for the same kitchen. Aviation and beauty training were not priced — see the account on the country page.
Living
~$550/mo
Single student, all in — deliberately the same figure as the degree page. It is the same person living the same way; only the training differs. Compared at country level, so capital cities and large metros run higher. The price level behind it prices the basket residents buy, and a foreign renter cannot reach the cheap end of local housing — poorer countries may still sit too low here.

Sunway University publishes an international rate for its two-year Diploma in Culinary Arts beside the Malaysian one — USD 8,198 a year against RM 33,000 — and says the dollar figure is indicative and billed in ringgit. It is one institution. Berjaya University College, whose hospitality school is the other name a foreign applicant meets, publishes no fee on its programme page at all, and Le Cordon Bleu’s Malaysian fee page returns 404. The previous figure, $9,000, cited “Malaysian culinary and hospitality academies” without naming one.

Pathoff judgement directed by evidence, not computed from it: the country’s position comes from the World Bank household consumption price level for 2024 (0.317 of the United States, CC BY 4.0 — the ICP benchmark carried forward annually by the World Bank’s own method); the US reference budget is ours. See the Pathoff method, section 12.

What it is like here

Malaysia has a serious hospitality and culinary training sector built around its tourism industry, priced far below European academies. It is a good place to get credentialed cheaply; it is not where the prestige is, so it works better as a first qualification than as a career-defining name.

How the process works

1

Choose an accredited academy

Check the qualification is recognised by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency before paying anything.

2–6 weeks
2

Student pass

Sponsored by the institution, same route as a degree.

4–8 weeks
