What it is like here
Tuition at Malaysian private universities and foreign branch campuses runs a few thousand dollars a year for a degree taught entirely in English, and living costs are low. The trade-off is the exit: post-study work rights are limited compared with Canada or Germany, so it is strong on cost and weak on staying afterwards.
How the process works
Get an offer, then let the university start the visa for you
You do not apply for the student pass yourself. The institution submits it through Education Malaysia Global Services, the agency the ministry set up for exactly this, and you must be outside Malaysia when it goes in. What you hand over is the offer letter, a passport with at least eighteen months left, a health declaration and your transcripts.
Pay the visa costs — about RM 2,800 before the bond
The charges are published line by line rather than as one number. A new application to a public university is RM 1,728 in processing, RM 159 for the electronic visa approval letter, RM 340 for the medical screening, RM 498 upward for the compulsory health insurance, RM 50 for the i-Kad identity card and RM 60 for the student pass sticker itself. Two more depend on your passport rather than on Malaysia: the entry visa runs RM 6 to RM 50 by nationality, and the refundable personal bond is set by nationality on a separate table.
Wait for the approval letter, then enter and finish it inside the country
The agency issues an electronic visa approval letter, which is what the airline and the border ask for; the paper trail is couriered to the institution. Once you have landed there is a post-arrival medical screening and the pass is endorsed in the passport. The pass is issued for the length of the programme but is renewed annually, and renewal is conditional — a 2.0 grade point average and eighty per cent attendance.
Know what the pass does not give you
It is a permission to study, not a permission to stay. There is no general post-study work route: converting to an employment pass means an employer applying for you, which is why the work-after-study ingredient on this page sits where it does. The bond comes back only if you cancel the pass properly before leaving.
