Apprentices are employed and paid; this is not a fee-paying route. The wage figures are for apprentices generally and not for international ones specifically, and getting a place requires a company to hire you and German good enough to be hired in.

A comparison of prices, not a budget: it says what things cost here against the United States, not what a month will cost you. Compared at country level, so capital cities and large metros run higher. The price level prices the basket residents buy, and a foreign renter cannot reach the cheap end of local housing — poorer countries may still sit too low here.

학비$0/yr — and paid a wage

German dual vocational training. There is no tuition to record because the arrangement runs the other way: an apprentice signs an employment contract with a company and is paid a training wage for the whole of it, while the vocational school part is publicly funded. Zero is the fee, not a gap in the data. The wage is published rather than asserted. The Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training, which has surveyed collectively agreed training pay since 1976, puts the 2025 average across all training years at €1,209 gross a month, up 6.7 per cent on the year; and the statutory minimum training pay, which applies where no collective agreement does, rises to €724 a month in 2026 from €682 in 2025.

Apprentices are employed and paid; this is not a fee-paying route. The wage figures are for apprentices generally and not for international ones specifically, and getting a place requires a company to hire you and German good enough to be hired in.

World Bank, 2024, CC BY 4.0: the PPP conversion factor for household consumption is 0.7015 local currency units per international dollar, against an official exchange rate of 0.9239 to the US dollar. Their ratio, 0.759, is the price level against the United States, whose own ratio is 1 by construction. Both figures are theirs; the division is ours. See the Pathoff method, section 12.

Pathoff outcome rubric (the Pathoff method, section 10-3), special outcome band "The training is employment": The apprentice is employed and paid from the first day and completion converts into a skilled-worker permit. This is not a post-study job hunt, it is a job — which is why it sits above the degree route rather than below it.

여기는 어떤 곳인가

The dual apprenticeship system puts trainees in a company from day one on a training wage, with the qualification recognised across the labour market — the inverse of paying an academy tens of thousands. The barrier is blunt: it runs entirely in German, and you generally need working German before anyone will take you.

절차는 이렇습니다

1

Get your German to working level

This is the real gate. Most training places expect solid conversational German before application.

⏱ 6–18 months
2

Find a company that will take you on

The company, not a school, is the sponsor — the training contract comes first.

⏱ 2–6 months
3

Apply for the vocational-training residence permit

Granted on the basis of the signed training contract.

⏱ 1–3 months
