International schooling at a fraction of the usual cost — and nobody's talking about it.

A range this wide is the fact. Between Fairview and ISKL the same city asks two and a half times as much for the same school year, and all of them teach a British, American or IB curriculum, so the curriculum does not tell you where in that range you are standing. Boarding is excluded. Fees rise every year group: the same schools charge roughly a fifth more at Year 11 than at Year 7.

A comparison of prices, not a budget: it says what things cost here against the United States, not what a month will cost you. Compared at country level, so capital cities and large metros run higher. The price level prices the basket residents buy, and a foreign renter cannot reach the cheap end of local housing — poorer countries may still sit too low here.

A guardian pass, for one parent
A long-term guardian pass tied to the child’s student pass and lasting as long as it does. The previous score, 84, was the top of this band and its only stated limit was that the pass is granted on application rather than held as of right. The income test and the one-parent rule were not in the record.

Secondary tuition at Year 9, read off two Kuala Lumpur international schools’ own 2026/27 fee schedules: Sri KDU International School Kota Damansara publishes RM 60,470 at Year 7 rising to RM 81,420 at Year 11, and Nexus International School Malaysia publishes RM 28,590 a term at Years 8–9, which is RM 85,770 a year. The figure above is the middle of those two. The city’s most expensive schools are deliberately left out, as the Pathoff method, section 12-4-1 requires: IGB International School charges RM 113,300 at Grade 9 and the International School of Kuala Lumpur about RM 142,000 in high school, and including them would build the assumption that an international school is whatever the city’s priciest school costs. Fairview International School sits below this sample at roughly RM 52,000 but publishes nothing on its own site — its fee page returns an enquiry form — so it is named here rather than counted. The previous figure, $8,000, cited no school at all.

World Bank, 2024, CC BY 4.0: the PPP conversion factor for household consumption is 1.4492 local currency units per international dollar, against an official exchange rate of 4.5764 to the US dollar. Their ratio, 0.317, is the price level against the United States, whose own ratio is 1 by construction. Both figures are theirs; the division is ours. See the Pathoff method, section 12.

보호자 비자A guardian pass, for one parent

Pathoff outcome rubric (the Pathoff method, section 10-1), early outcome band "A parent route exists with limits": A dedicated guardian pass covers a parent for the whole of the child’s schooling, with no nationality test, which is more than most countries here offer. Moved to the foot of the band rather than the top of it, because the limits are larger than this record said. The Alice Smith School, which processes these applications continually, states that Kuala Lumpur Immigration issues guardian visas only to mothers, and that a father holding any long-term visa must have it shortened or cancelled before the application can proceed. It also gives the financial test: proof of about RM 25,000 a month of income arising outside Malaysia, evidenced by payslips and bank statements, rising where more than one child is enrolled. A secondary source says both parents have been eligible since 2024 and the school’s own page says otherwise; that disagreement is left standing rather than resolved, because we could not read the immigration department’s own statement of it. Either way the income floor is the binding limit for most families, and a band that reads "exists with limits" should not sit at its ceiling when one of the limits is roughly seventy thousand dollars a year of offshore income.

여기는 어떤 곳인가

Malaysia runs dozens of British- and American-curriculum international schools around Kuala Lumpur and Penang at a small fraction of what the same curriculum costs in the UK or Singapore. English is widely spoken, violent crime is low, and a parent can accompany a child on a long-term pass. The trade-off: placement into top-tier universities is a notch below the traditional destinations, so it shines for K–12 more than for the final degree.

절차는 이렇습니다

1

Pick the school first — it decides the price and the paperwork

A place is offered before any visa moves, and the school files the pass with the Student Pass Unit for its own state rather than through the higher-education agency. Entry costs are separate from tuition and are not small: at the two schools priced on this page, application is RM 1,300 to RM 1,500, registration RM 10,000 to RM 20,000, and a deposit of RM 10,000 or one term.

⏱ 1–3 months, earlier for a September start
2

A parent applies separately, and pays separately

The child gets a student pass at RM 60. The accompanying parent gets a social visit pass, filed with its own form and proof of financial capability and twelve months of health insurance, at RM 90. They are two applications on two documents, and the parent’s one is what makes the arrangement work.

⏱ Filed alongside the child’s
3

Renew every year, both of you

Neither pass is granted for the length of schooling. Both are annual, and the parent’s is tied to the child’s remaining a student in good standing, so a school change is a visa event as well as an admissions one.
