South Korea

Among the best school systems anywhere, and the most expensive schools in Asia.

Individual published figures for Seoul: roughly KRW 30–45 million a year at middle and high school across the fully international schools, with the largest of them reported at KRW 38–42 million for high school. Tier 3 because the schools publish fee tables to applicants rather than openly.

Pathoff judgement directed by evidence, not computed from it: the country’s position comes from the World Bank household consumption price level for 2024 (0.640 of the United States, CC BY 4.0 — the ICP benchmark carried forward annually by the World Bank’s own method); the US reference budget is ours. See the Pathoff method, section 12.

Pathoff outcome rubric (the Pathoff method, section 10-1), early outcome band "A guardian must be arranged": Korea’s dependent status runs from a resident to their spouse and children, not from a child to a parent. There is no status a parent can hold on the basis of a child’s schooling.

What it is like here

Korean schooling is genuinely excellent and Seoul’s international schools are among the strongest in Asia — and among the priciest anywhere, at thirty to forty-five million won a year at secondary level. The immigration position is the ordinary East Asian one: there is no parental status, so a parent needs a work or business visa of their own.

How the process works

1

A parent secures a status of residence

Employment, business or a spouse’s status. The child follows as a dependant.

1–3 months
2

Check the school’s eligibility rules

Some international schools restrict admission by nationality or time spent abroad.

Timing not confirmed
3

Register the alien card, then health insurance

Enrolment in the national scheme follows the residence card.

2–4 weeks

Where families cluster

Seongbuk / Yongsan, Seoul
The established international schools and the diplomatic quarter
Songdo, Incheon
A purpose-built international district with newer schools
Jeju Global Education City
Branch campuses of British and American schools, on an island
