College diplomas that lead to the same open work permit — if the field is on the list.

Tuition
~$11.6–21k/yr
An earlier draft of this figure used a reported CAD 10,100 for an advanced diploma, which sat far below every other Ontario college rate and was almost certainly a domestic or per-term number. It was caught by the neighbour check in the Pathoff method, section 14-2 and replaced.

Single student, all in — deliberately the same figure as the degree page. It is the same person living the same way; only the training differs. Compared at country level, so capital cities and large metros run higher. The price level behind it prices the basket residents buy, and a foreign renter cannot reach the cheap end of local housing — poorer countries may still sit too low here.

Tuition~$11.6–21k/yr

Individual published figures for Ontario colleges: Conestoga publishes international tuition of CAD 15,844–28,697 a year across its programmes, with about CAD 17,446 giving access to most of them. Recorded at CAD 17,446 a year, the figure this entry already rested on, now in the currency it was published in.

Pathoff judgement directed by evidence, not computed from it: the country’s position comes from the World Bank household consumption price level for 2024 (0.906 of the United States, CC BY 4.0 — the ICP benchmark carried forward annually by the World Bank’s own method); the US reference budget is ours. See the Pathoff method, section 12.

Field reputationInternationally credible

Pathoff education rubric (the Pathoff method, section 9-2), special band "Internationally credible": Canadian animation, culinary and technical training is recognised well beyond the region by the industries that hire from it, and one animation school in particular is a name the field knows. Mid-band because outside a few programmes the college sector is domestic in reputation.

Industry accessThe same open permit — if the field qualifies

Pathoff outcome rubric (the Pathoff method, section 10-3), special outcome band "A reliable route into the trade": Judged on its own. A college graduate gets the same open work permit a degree holder does, with no employer and no sponsorship — genuinely rare. Held below the degree score because non-degree graduates, and only they, must have studied a field on the government’s eligible list.

The field-of-study requirement applies to study permits applied for on or after 1 November 2024, and the list itself was cut and partly restored during 2025.

What it is like here

Canada is one of very few countries where a college diploma leads to the same open post-study work permit a degree does, which is why its colleges recruit so heavily abroad. The catch arrived in November 2024: for non-degree programmes the field of study now has to be on a government list, and that list moved during 2025. Choosing the wrong programme costs the entire route.

How the process works

1

Check the field against the eligible list first

For a college programme this decides whether there is a post-study route at all.

Timing not confirmed
2

Apply to the college and take the study permit

The same permit process as a degree, under the same provincial allocation.
