Tuition~$31.6–42.4k/yr

British universities publish a fee per course, so the sample is two that publish the whole table. The University of Nottingham's 2026/27 list gives an international fee for every undergraduate course: £20,000 to £34,000 across 181 of them once medicine, dentistry, veterinary science and nursing are removed, with a median of £33,000. The University of Glasgow publishes two bands for 2026/27 — £27,720 for arts and social sciences and £33,210 for science, engineering and life sciences — a median of £30,465; its dentistry, medicine and veterinary rates of £37,350 to £62,730 are left out. Recorded at the median of the two, £31,732.50 a year.

Pathoff judgement directed by evidence, not computed from it: the country’s position comes from the World Bank household consumption price level for 2024 (0.873 of the United States, CC BY 4.0 — the ICP benchmark carried forward annually by the World Bank’s own method); the US reference budget is ours. See the Pathoff method, section 12.

What it is like here

The UK is the strongest performer among the obvious picks, and the reason is time. A master's takes one year rather than two, and the post-study work route lets graduates stay and work without a sponsor first. That combination genuinely narrows the gap with cheaper countries. What keeps it out of the top half is the sticker price and the fact that the post-study route has been under repeated political review, so its length is not something to bank on.

How the process works

1

Apply, undergraduate through the central service or direct for postgraduate

Undergraduate applications run through a single national system with fixed deadlines.

3–9 months
2

Student visa with maintenance funds

You must hold a set amount for a set number of months before applying, and the figure depends on whether you study in London.

3–8 weeks
3

Pay the immigration health surcharge

Charged upfront for the full length of the visa. It buys access to the health service but it is a real line item.
