The boarding school idea everyone pictures, and it just got 20% more expensive.

Boarding; day schools are roughly half. VAT has applied to private school fees since January 2025, which raised bills by about a fifth
Living
87.3% of US prices
A comparison of prices, not a budget: it says what things cost here against the United States, not what a month will cost you. Compared at country level, so capital cities and large metros run higher. The price level prices the basket residents buy, and a foreign renter cannot reach the cheap end of local housing — poorer countries may still sit too low here.

World Bank, 2024, CC BY 4.0: the PPP conversion factor for household consumption is 0.6827 local currency units per international dollar, against an official exchange rate of 0.7824 to the US dollar. Their ratio, 0.873, is the price level against the United States, whose own ratio is 1 by construction. Both figures are theirs; the division is ours. See the Pathoff method, section 12.

Pathoff outcome rubric (the Pathoff method, section 10-1), early outcome band "Partial or conditional access": A dedicated parent visa exists but is limited to younger children, so it covers under half a school career and stops before the boarding years most families are buying.

What it is like here

British boarding schools are the reference point the rest of the world copies, and the route into UK universities is direct. Two things changed the sums recently. VAT now applies to private school fees, adding a fifth to a bill that was already the highest on this list. And a parent can only accompany a child on a dedicated visa while that child is young, so for a teenager the family separates by design rather than by accident.

How the process works

1

Sit the entrance assessment

Selective schools test one to two years before entry, and the popular ones fill early.

⏱ 12–24 months ahead
2

School issues the sponsorship reference

The school must be a licensed sponsor; the child's visa is built on its reference number.

⏱ 2–8 weeks
3

Decide the guardianship arrangement

Where the parent visa does not apply, schools require a UK-based guardian. Budget for it; it is a real recurring cost.
