Single student, all in. Compared at country level, so capital cities and large metros run higher. The price level behind it prices the basket residents buy, and a foreign renter cannot reach the cheap end of local housing — poorer countries may still sit too low here.

Works here, unknown elsewhere
No university here enters the CWTS Leiden Open Edition 2025 sample: none clears the ranking’s publication threshold. That is a fact about the country’s research output rather than a gap in our data — and it is research output, not teaching quality, either way. Foreign branch campuses on the island award their parent institution’s degree, which is not a Mauritian one, so they do not change this reading (the Pathoff method, section 9-1).

TuitionNo data yet

No figure recorded. Sources disagree by a factor of five to nine: one states that the University of Mauritius charges local and foreign students the same rate, from about US$756 a year, while others put international fees at US$4,000–7,000. No official schedule could be read to settle it, and averaging two accounts that far apart would be inventing a number. See the Pathoff method, section 14-5.

Pathoff judgement directed by evidence, not computed from it: the country’s position comes from the World Bank household consumption price level for 2024 (0.429 of the United States, CC BY 4.0 — the ICP benchmark carried forward annually by the World Bank’s own method); the US reference budget is ours. See the Pathoff method, section 12.

Pathoff education rubric (the Pathoff method, section 9-1), degree band "Locally solid, externally unknown": The qualification works in the Mauritian labour market and across the region. Outside it a Mauritian degree needs a credential assessment and no institution is a name an employer recognises.

Pathoff outcome rubric (the Pathoff method, section 10-2), degree outcome band "A route that needs an employer": Graduation confers no period to stay and look for work, and the occupation permit for a professional is granted against a job with a minimum salary. Mid-band: no lottery and no nationality test, but nothing is conferred by the degree itself.

What it is like here

Mauritius has built a small higher education sector and hosts branch campuses of foreign universities, and living costs make studying here genuinely cheap. What it does not have is a reputation abroad: no Mauritian university appears in the research ranking we use, and a branch campus awards its parent institution’s degree rather than a Mauritian one, so it does not lift the local qualification.

How the process works

1

Check whether the award is Mauritian or a parent institution’s

It changes what the qualification is worth outside the island.

Timing not confirmed
2

Student visa through the institution

Registered institutions sponsor the residence for the length of the course.
