Kazakhstan

An English-medium flagship built from scratch, and nothing waiting afterwards.

5/5
ingredients confirmed
Every ingredient this page asks for has a figure and a source.
Tuition
~$15k/yr
This prices the country’s English-medium flagship, which is the realistic route for someone arriving without Kazakh or Russian. Other Kazakh universities charge a small fraction of it and teach in Kazakh or Russian; no international schedule for them could be read.
Living
~$700/mo
Single student, all in. Compared at country level, so capital cities and large metros run higher. The price level behind it prices the basket residents buy, and a foreign renter cannot reach the cheap end of local housing — poorer countries may still sit too low here.
Education
Works here and across the region
Research impact 17th percentile globally — median of 5 ranked universities (CWTS Leiden Open Edition 2025). Research output, not teaching quality; it informs the band, it does not set the score. Five institutions clear the threshold, so the median rests on a very small sample.
Work after study
No post-study route; an employer and a quota
Safety
High
Third in its region and forty-fourth globally — safer on the index than Italy or the United Kingdom

Tuition~$15k/yr

Nazarbayev University is reported at USD 15,000 for the 2026/2027 academic year for domestic and international students alike, roughly KZT 7 million. Re-read attempted and not finished: Nazarbayev University publishes USD 15,000 a year for local and international students alike, which is what this figure already is, but it is the country's most expensive institution by a wide margin. Al-Farabi Kazakh National University's approved 2025-2026 fee schedule sits behind a redirect loop, so the second, much lower figure could not be read.

Pathoff judgement directed by evidence, not computed from it: the country’s position comes from the World Bank household consumption price level for 2024 (0.375 of the United States, CC BY 4.0 — the ICP benchmark carried forward annually by the World Bank’s own method); the US reference budget is ours. See the Pathoff method, section 12.

EducationWorks here and across the region

Pathoff education rubric (the Pathoff method, section 9-1), degree band "Locally solid, externally unknown": The qualification works in Kazakhstan and across Central Asia, and the English-medium flagship is taken seriously regionally. Outside the region a Kazakh degree needs a credential assessment and no institution is a name.

Work after studyNo post-study route; an employer and a quota

Pathoff outcome rubric (the Pathoff method, section 10-2), degree outcome band "A route you cannot plan around": Graduation gives no period to stay. Employment requires an employer to obtain a work permit under a quota system set by occupation and region, so whether the route is open in a given year is not something the graduate affects. At the top of the band because the digital-nomad route offers a way to stay that does not depend on it.

What it is like here

Nazarbayev University teaches entirely in English on a Western model and charges every student the same USD 15,000 regardless of nationality, which is unusual and worth knowing. The rest of the sector teaches in Kazakh and Russian and costs far less. What does not exist is a post-study route: staying means an employer, a work permit and a quota system.

How the process works

1

Check the language of instruction

English-medium study is concentrated in a small number of institutions.

Timing not confirmed
2

Student visa on the university’s invitation

Issued for the course, with registration after arrival.

1–2 months

Where students go

Nazarbayev University and the government-funded institutes
Almaty
