Tuition~$5.3–7.4k/yr

Chilean universities charge foreign students the same arancel as Chileans; neither of these two publishes a separate rate. The Universidad de Santiago sets its 2026 aranceles by resolution and lists every career: 242 of them from CLP 1,793,246 to 6,737,334 once medicine, dentistry and the clinical health careers are removed, a median of CLP 5,037,656 a year. The Universidad de Chile publishes its 2026 aranceles for new students, where the arts run CLP 3,588,100 to 5,492,400, law is 6,964,300, commercial engineering 7,967,800 and engineering and sciences 8,695,300 — a median of CLP 6,964,300 across the figures it gives. Recorded at the median of the two, CLP 6,000,978 a year. The Santiago figure is the firmer of the two, being a full career-by-career list against a set of published examples. The annual matriculation right, CLP 217,600 at Chile and CLP 212,000 at Santiago, is not tuition and is left out, as France's CVEC and Germany's semester contribution are.

Pathoff judgement directed by evidence, not computed from it: the country’s position comes from the World Bank household consumption price level for 2024 (0.493 of the United States, CC BY 4.0 — the ICP benchmark carried forward annually by the World Bank’s own method); the US reference budget is ours. See the Pathoff method, section 12.

Pathoff education rubric (the Pathoff method, section 9-1), degree band "Recognised within a bloc": The two Santiago universities are the reference institutions for Spanish-speaking South America and the qualification is accepted across it. Mid-band because outside the region the degree is assessed rather than assumed.

Pathoff outcome rubric (the Pathoff method, section 10-2), degree outcome band "A route that needs an employer": Graduation confers no period to stay; a student-visa holder changes status on the strength of an employment contract under the 2021 migration law. Mid-band: no quota and no nationality test, but nothing follows from the degree itself.

What it is like here

The Universidad de Chile and the Catholic University are the region’s best after Brazil’s, tuition runs a few thousand dollars a year, and the country works — institutions function, the health system is real, and the safety score is second in South America. The constraints are language, since teaching is in Spanish, and the absence of any post-study route.

How the process works

1

Have the secondary qualification recognised

Foreign school-leaving certificates need convalidation before admission.

2–6 months
2

Student residence applied for from abroad

The 2021 law requires most residence categories to be applied for before entry.

3–8 months

Where students go

Santiago
Both major universities and nearly all the graduate employers
Valparaíso
The Catholic University’s coastal campus, cheaper and slower
