학비
연 ~$3.5–7.1k
This prices the national-university route, which is open to foreigners at the domestic rate. Private universities charge more — commonly ¥700,000 to ¥1,500,000 — and no single published schedule for that range was verified.
생활비
월 ~$1,200
Single student, all in. Compared at country level, so capital cities and large metros run higher. The price level behind it prices the basket residents buy, and a foreign renter cannot reach the cheap end of local housing — poorer countries may still sit too low here.
교육
Widely recognised
Research impact 15th percentile globally — median of 107 ranked universities (CWTS Leiden Open Edition 2025). Research output, not teaching quality; it informs the band, it does not set the score. The figure is also a sampling artefact of the kind the Pathoff method, section 9-4 warns about: with 107 institutions in the sample, the median sits among regional universities, the same effect that puts the United States on 66 with 276.
졸업 후 취업
Up to a year to look for work, unsponsored
The status must be applied for before the student status lapses; leaving Japan and letting graduation pass while abroad forfeits it.

Japanese universities charge international students what they charge Japanese students; none of these three publishes a separate rate. The University of Tokyo's own fee page gives an annual undergraduate tuition of ¥642,960 from April 2026, alongside a one-off admission fee of ¥282,000 that is not part of this figure. Kyoto University publishes ¥535,800 a year, the standard national-university amount. Waseda, one of the private universities international undergraduates most often choose, publishes ¥1,081,000 of tuition for the first year of its School of Political Science and Economics, rising to ¥1,281,000 afterwards, with the ¥200,000 entrance fee counted separately. Recorded at the median of the three, ¥642,960 a year. The previous figure was the University of Tokyo alone.

Pathoff judgement directed by evidence, not computed from it: the country’s position comes from the World Bank household consumption price level for 2024 (0.657 of the United States, CC BY 4.0 — the ICP benchmark carried forward annually by the World Bank’s own method); the US reference budget is ours. See the Pathoff method, section 12.

교육Widely recognised

Pathoff education rubric (the Pathoff method, section 9-1), degree band "Internationally recognised": Several institutions are known by name outside Japan and the degree is accepted in most countries without explanation. At the foot of the band because the English-taught programme count is small and the median Japanese university means nothing abroad.

Research impact 15th percentile globally — median of 107 ranked universities (CWTS Leiden Open Edition 2025). Research output, not teaching quality; it informs the band, it does not set the score. Pathoff outcome rubric (the Pathoff method, section 10-2), degree outcome band "A post-study route you can rely on": Graduates change to Designated Activities for continued job hunting — six months, renewable once to a year — with no employer needed first. Below the Netherlands in the band because each grant requires a recommendation letter from the school and documented evidence of job hunting, which makes it conditional rather than automatic.

The status must be applied for before the student status lapses; leaving Japan and letting graduation pass while abroad forfeits it.

여기는 어떤 곳인가

Japan sets national-university tuition by ordinance and applies it regardless of nationality, so a degree at a top public institution costs a few thousand dollars a year — and the weak yen has taken a third off that in dollar terms since 2021. Graduates get up to a year to look for work with no employer needed. The limit is language: the English-taught offering is real but narrow, and outside it the degree is taught in Japanese.

절차는 이렇습니다

1

Sit the EJU or apply to an English-taught programme

The Japanese-taught route runs through the Examination for Japanese University Admission; English-taught programmes admit on their own documents.

6–12 months
2

Certificate of Eligibility, then the visa

The university applies for the CoE in Japan; the consulate issues the visa on it.

2–3 months
3

Change status before you graduate

The job-hunting status has to be applied for while the student status is still valid.

1–2 months

유학생이 가는 곳

Tokyo
Todai, Waseda and Keio, and most of the English-taught programmes
Kyoto / Osaka
Kyoto University, lower rents, a slower city
Fukuoka
Cheapest of the major student cities and closest to the mainland
