Design and hospitality schools with real names — and a graduate route built for universities.

5/5
ingredients confirmed
Every ingredient this page asks for has a figure and a source.
Tuition
~$13–18.6k/yr
Living
~$1,450/mo
Single student, all in — deliberately the same figure as the degree page. It is the same person living the same way; only the training differs. Compared at country level, so capital cities and large metros run higher. The price level behind it prices the basket residents buy, and a foreign renter cannot reach the cheap end of local housing — poorer countries may still sit too low here.
Field reputation
Internationally credible
Field reputation is concentrated in design and hospitality rather than spread across the vocational sector.
Industry access
No orientation year for a vocational qualification
This is the mirror image of Germany, where the vocational route scores higher than the degree route because the training is itself employment.
Safety
Very high
Top twenty globally, and among the calmest places in Europe to be a pedestrian

Pathoff judgement directed by evidence, not computed from it: the country’s position comes from the World Bank household consumption price level for 2024 (0.803 of the United States, CC BY 4.0 — the ICP benchmark carried forward annually by the World Bank’s own method); the US reference budget is ours. See the Pathoff method, section 12.

Field reputationInternationally credible

Pathoff education rubric (the Pathoff method, section 9-2), special band "Internationally credible": Dutch design and hospitality schools are recognised well beyond the region and their qualifications are accepted by international employers. Short of the top band because for most fields the name alone does not open the door.

Field reputation is concentrated in design and hospitality rather than spread across the vocational sector.

Industry accessNo orientation year for a vocational qualification

Pathoff outcome rubric (the Pathoff method, section 10-3), special outcome band "A route that needs an employer": Judged independently of the degree page and it comes out lower. The IND limits the orientation year to accredited bachelor’s, master’s and post-master’s graduates, so a vocational graduate has no post-study period and needs an employer to sponsor a work permit.

This is the mirror image of Germany, where the vocational route scores higher than the degree route because the training is itself employment.

What it is like here

Dutch design and hospitality training carries weight in both industries, and Eindhoven and The Hague are names a hiring manager recognises. The catch is structural and easy to miss: the orientation year that makes the Dutch degree route so attractive requires an accredited bachelor’s or master’s, so a vocational qualification does not open it. A graduate of the trade route needs an employer.

How the process works

1

Check the qualification level

Whether a course is MBO or HBO decides whether the orientation year is available afterwards.

Timing not confirmed
2

Apply directly to the school

Design and hospitality schools admit on portfolio and interview rather than through Studielink alone.

2–6 months

Where the training is

Eindhoven
Design, and the industry week that the whole field attends
The Hague / Amsterdam
Hospitality management, with placements attached
