Tuition~$3.2–5.5k/yr

The University of Botswana's 2025/26 schedule of fees prices bachelors by credit with an annual estimate at the minimum thirty-credit load, and separates residents and African students from non-residents: P74,700 for science and engineering and P56,100 for the other faculties, a median of P65,400, with medicine left out. BIUST publishes a flat per-credit rate over a forty-credit year — P1,100 for non-SADC undergraduates against P800 for citizens and SADC nationals — so P44,000 a year. Recorded at the median of the two, P54,700 a year. BIUST's site fails TLS verification over https and was read over plain http.

Pathoff judgement directed by evidence, not computed from it: the country’s position comes from the World Bank household consumption price level for 2024 (0.392 of the United States, CC BY 4.0 — the ICP benchmark carried forward annually by the World Bank’s own method); the US reference budget is ours. See the Pathoff method, section 12.

EducationRecognised across southern Africa

Pathoff education rubric (the Pathoff method, section 9-1), degree band "Locally solid, externally unknown": Taught in English and accepted across SADC and the Commonwealth with assessment; the University of Botswana is respected regionally. At the top of the band, short of the one above because outside southern Africa the institution is not a name.

Work after studyNo post-study route, and a localisation policy against you

Pathoff outcome rubric (the Pathoff method, section 10-2), degree outcome band "A route you cannot plan around": Graduation confers no period to stay, and a work permit is granted only where no citizen can fill the post — a localisation policy Botswana applies deliberately and consistently. Above the floor of the band because the process is transparent and the decisions are not arbitrary.

What it is like here

The University of Botswana publishes its whole fee schedule, in English, with the international rate printed next to the local one. That transparency is rarer than it should be. The number itself is the interesting part: students from anywhere in Africa pay the resident rate, and students from other continents pay exactly twice it.

How the process works

1

Apply directly; teaching is in English

Admission is on academic record and the fee schedule is published in full.

3–6 months
2

Study permit and residence permit

A residence permit is needed for study longer than six months.

2–4 months
