생활비
30.9% (미국 물가 대비)
A comparison of prices, not a budget: it says what things cost here against the United States, not what a month will cost you. Compared at country level, so capital cities and large metros run higher. The price level prices the basket residents buy, and a foreign renter cannot reach the cheap end of local housing — poorer countries may still sit too low here.
치안
2.089 · 101st of 163
Mid-table globally; the index is dragged by the southern border provinces and by political instability rather than by street crime in Bangkok
영주권
Retirement visa, renewed forever
Section 40 of the Immigration Act allows an annual quota of no more than one hundred people per country for permanent residence. The route also excludes anyone under fifty.
의료
Private, affordable, and genuinely good
Out-of-pocket spending is 9.9% of current health expenditure here (World Bank, 2023, CC BY 4.0) — among the lowest on this site, and Thailand scores 66 while the United States, on 10.9%, scores 38. The measure counts only what insured people pay — not premiums, and not the uninsured — which is why the United States comes out at 10.9%, ahead of most countries on this site.

생활비30.9% (미국 물가 대비)

World Bank, 2024, CC BY 4.0: the PPP conversion factor for household consumption is 10.9070 local currency units per international dollar, against an official exchange rate of 35.2935 to the US dollar. Their ratio, 0.309, is the price level against the United States, whose own ratio is 1 by construction. Both figures are theirs; the division is ours. See the Pathoff method, section 12.

영주권Retirement visa, renewed forever

Pathoff outcome rubric (the Pathoff method, section 10-4), residency band "A route with conditions you can meet": The Non-Immigrant O-A route publishes its terms — age 50 or over, THB 800,000 on deposit or THB 65,000 a month, and health insurance to a stated minimum — and they have held steady. Mid-band because it is a one-year permission renewed indefinitely, work of any kind is prohibited, and settlement does not follow.

Section 40 of the Immigration Act allows an annual quota of no more than one hundred people per country for permanent residence. The route also excludes anyone under fifty.

Pathoff healthcare rubric (the Pathoff method, section 13-2), band "Covered, with a private top-up in practice": A foreign resident buys private care rather than joining the public scheme, but it is affordable and serious treatment is done here — Thailand is a country people travel to for it, not from. At the foot of the band for the private-purchase structure and because cover gets hard to buy with age.

여기는 어떤 곳인가

Over fifty, with THB 800,000 in the bank or THB 65,000 a month coming in, and the visa is a published, stable, renewable route into a country where a couple’s costs are the lowest on this site and private hospitals are among the best in Asia. What it never becomes is permanent: the Immigration Act caps permanent residence at one hundred people per nationality per year, so this is a stay you renew, not a place you settle.
