Single student, all in. Compared at country level, so capital cities and large metros run higher. The price level behind it prices the basket residents buy, and a foreign renter cannot reach the cheap end of local housing — poorer countries may still sit too low here.

Research impact 32nd percentile globally — median of 209 ranked universities (CWTS Leiden Open Edition 2025). Research output, not teaching quality; it informs the band, it does not set the score. What we corrected here

Figures we published, and what reading the source did to them. The old ones were ours, not anyone else’s — this is our record of being wrong, kept where the figure it is about lives.

Tuition~$2–4.7k/yr

India's public and private sectors price foreign undergraduates quite differently, so the sample holds one of each. IIT Delhi's own institute fee structure for B.Tech entrants publishes foreign-student tuition of USD 2,000 a year for non-SAARC nationals and USD 1,000 for SAARC nationals, on a table whose Indian-national rows are labelled annual. Manipal Academy of Higher Education, the largest private destination for international undergraduates, publishes its 2026-27 foreign and NRI fees in dollars: B.Tech tuition of USD 4,350, 4,700 and 9,450 a year depending on the programme, a median of 4,700. Recorded at the median of the two, USD 3,350 a year, with no conversion because both publish in dollars. One caution, stated rather than hidden: most foreign undergraduates enter public institutions through DASA, the Ministry of Education scheme, whose 2026 consolidated fee sheet puts foreign tuition at USD 4,000 for non-SAARC nationals — but only the postgraduate sheet is published at the moment and several of its rows are per semester, so we could not tell what period the undergraduate figure covers. If it is annual, the true median sits nearer USD 4,000 and this figure is low. The previous figure, USD 9,500, was the top of a private-university range quoted by a survey.

Pathoff judgement directed by evidence, not computed from it: the country’s position comes from the World Bank household consumption price level for 2024 (0.238 of the United States, CC BY 4.0 — the ICP benchmark carried forward annually by the World Bank’s own method); the US reference budget is ours. See the Pathoff method, section 12.

Pathoff education rubric (the Pathoff method, section 9-1), degree band "Recognised within a bloc": Indian engineering, technology and medical qualifications are accepted across the anglophone world, and a few institutions are names in their own right. Mid-band because the median Indian university means nothing abroad and the qualification is normally assessed rather than taken on trust.

Work after studyNothing follows graduation, and the work visa has a floor

Pathoff outcome rubric (the Pathoff method, section 10-2), degree outcome band "A route you cannot plan around": Graduation gives no period to stay. The employment visa requires a gross annual salary above roughly USD 25,000, far above what a new graduate is offered in India, so the requirement excludes precisely the people leaving these universities. Narrow exemptions exist for chefs, language teachers and embassy staff.

What it is like here

Higher education here is in English, the private universities charge a fraction of what their Western equivalents do, and Indian engineering and technology qualifications are recognised wherever Indian graduates already work, which is nearly everywhere. What does not exist is a route to stay: graduation confers nothing, and the employment visa carries a salary floor of roughly USD 25,000 that new graduates do not clear.

How the process works

1

Apply directly; teaching is in English

No language qualification is required, which removes the usual first obstacle.

2–5 months
2

Student visa on the letter of admission

Issued for the course length, with registration required after arrival for longer stays.

1–2 months
3

Plan to leave, or to clear the salary floor

This is the decision the degree does not make for you.
