Pathoff outcome rubric (the Pathoff method, section 10-4), residency band "Settlement is open": The pensionado category is granted on a pension of $1,500 a month plus $250 per dependant and the rentista on $2,000 a month of investment income, and both are special categories that confer permanent residence immediately rather than after years of temporary permits, with a short road to naturalisation after that. At the floor of the band because the thresholds are half as high again as Panama’s and the administration is slower than the rules suggest.

Pathoff healthcare rubric (the Pathoff method, section 13-2), band "You buy your own, and it is affordable": A legal resident can enrol in the national family health insurance through one of the licensed insurers, premiums are low, and Santo Domingo’s private hospitals are good and quick. At the top of the band: what a foreign resident practically buys is a private plan, and the most complex cases still go to Miami, which is two hours away.

What it is like here

The Dominican Republic grants permanent residence at once to someone arriving on a pension of $1,500 a month or an investment income of $2,000, skipping the years of renewals most countries require, and it is the cheapest place in the Caribbean to do it. The reservations are ordinary and real: hurricanes, patchy infrastructure outside the cities, and a peacefulness score that sits below the middle of this list.
